Taking numerous PSAT practice tests is recommended for test day success. It’s best not to worry too much over the PSAT, but use it as a stepping stone to success on the SAT. However, most students would do well to relax as much as possible so they can do their very best, and get as much as they possibly can out of their PSAT experience, in order to learn from it so they can be as well prepared as possible for the SAT.įor most students, the SAT is the really important test, and there is a lot of scholarship money riding on it, too, as well as chances of being admitted to elite colleges. There is a lot of anxiety about the PSAT, and this is understandable, as students with the highest scores can qualify for a lot of scholarship money (and get their name and picture in the local paper). Students have two hours and ten minutes to complete the entire test. Each section is scored from 20 to 80, meaning the highest possible score is a 240. “It feels wonderful to be considered a potential finalist and I am grateful for this opportunity, no matter what happens,” Chen said.There are three sections on the PSAT: Writing Skills, Critical Reading, and Math. The scholarship selectors will evaluate the finalists’ academic ability, PSAT and SAT scores, the high school’s rigor level, the high school official’s written recommendation, the student’s extracurricular activities, and an essay. In February of next year, around 15,000 finalists will be named, putting them in the running to win a National Merit Scholarship.

In order to be a finalist, students must meet high academic standards throughout their high school career, submit complete applications to their schools officials, and earn SAT scores “that confirm their 2014 PSAT performance.” The semifinalists scored in the top one percent of the nation in the PSAT. The Brahmas will now be competing to become a finalist in February. The semifinalists are Crystal Chang, Eric Chen, Janet Du, Kevin Gu, Melody Guo, Charlene Hsu, Renée Kau, Betty Kim, Prince Kim, Gloria Lee, Felix Lien, Letitia So, Angela Song, Frances Song, Miriam Hsuan-Te Sun, Jonathan Sun, Kyle Wang, Margaret Wang, Ava Wu, Frances Wu, Jennifer Wu, Claire Yang, and Adele Zhang. Twenty-three seniors were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists based on the results of last October’s PSAT. What should be uncommon news at an average high school is, once again, no surprise here at Diamond Bar High School.
